Quay walls and berthing facilities Esso Rotterdam

For the refinery of Esso Rotterdam (ExxonMobil) at the 3rd Petroleum Harbour in Rotterdam the petrochemical marine (un)loading facilities needed to be expanded. The additional tanker berthing facilities include two quay walls and extension of a jetty. Esso and Port of Rotterdam Authority as joint Employer assigned all engineering and technical assistance tasks to Lievense, including:

• Conceptual design / final design
• Geotechnical and soil investigations
• Tender preparation and bid evaluation
• Construction contract management and supervision

Major challenges in this project are the limited working space and the presence of numerous cables and oil and product pipelines, construction execution at a petrochemical site in full operation, and the presence of severe soil and groundwater contamination.
