St. George's Revitalization Plan, Grenada

The St. George’s Revitalization Plan as proposed by Züblin Grenada Ltd. in 2004 includes a number of infrastructure and commercial developments in the St. George’s area, which are interrelated for functional and economic reasons:

Development of a new commercial port and free-trade zone outside the town (north of St. John’s River) and redevelopment of the “old port” for tourist, residential, commercial and entertainment use.

Connection of the new port and free trade zone with the town by construction of a traffic tunnel between Tanteen and St. John’s River.

Upgrading of the Carenage and surroundings, including pedestrian walkways, improvement of the traffic situation and a better access to the hospital, along with the development of a mega-yacht harbour.

(Re)development around the Blue Lagoon, including Spice Island Marina Village and the Islander Hotel.

It is worth also to consider the viability of an alternative location for the new commercial port, free trade zone and connecting road infrastructure. This alternative location should be south of St. George’s, on the south coast of Grenada. For the northern location preliminary design studies are being carried out, for the alternative southern location preliminary design studies will be undertaken soon.
